The hurricane was expected to weaken quickly in Guerrero state’s steep mountains. Otis had strengthened rapidly, going from a tropical storm to a Category 5 hurricane in 12 hours Tuesday. Otis’ arrival came just days after Hurricane Norma struck the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja California Peninsula to the north. Acapulco is a city of more than 1 million people at the foot of steep mountains. The storm was expected to become a powerful extratropical cyclone by Thursday, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

The Twins advanced — for the first time in 21 years — to play the defending World Series champion Astros. It's familiar territory for Correa, who played for Houston for seven seasons before signing with Minnesota in free agency. The Blue Jays hit the ball hard again and made Gray work for his first career win in the playoffs, but the veteran right-hander finished five effective innings. Left-hander Yusei Kikuchi, one of four Blue Jays who made 31 or more starts this season, was greeted by a single by Max Kepler. The Twins also lost a division series to the A’s in 2006 and a wild-card series to the Astros in 2020.

NEW YORK (AP) — Toronto Blue Jays slugger Vladimir Guerrero Jr. got good news Thursday when an MRI on his right knee showed inflammation and no structural damage. Guerrero was held of the starting lineup for the second straight night as the Blue Jays completed a three-game series with the Yankees. “I think having the MRI kind of give him peace of mind was a good thing,” Toronto manager John Schneider said. “It's very hard for me not being in the lineup but thank God we're in an OK position right now,” Guerrero said. He said he had been dealing with knee pain all season but woke up with the inflammation Tuesday.

José Guerrero’s phone buzzes from morning to midnight with sweaty pleas for help: The air-conditioner fan just quit. As Phoenix slogs through a record 20 straight days of 110-degree or higher temperatures, Mr. Guerrero, 33, has emerged as maybe the most essential worker in a town desperate to stay cool: the A.C. repair guy. “We live in a city where you have to have it,” he said. So now, Mr. Guerrero, his two brothers and their father roll out seven days a week, heading for suffocating attics and tar-shingled rooftops across the Valley of the Sun to coax ailing air-conditioners back to life. They fix leaking refrigerant lines, replace burned-out capacitors and try to lower Phoenix’s temperature a few degrees.
